As I sit here in my silent room with Barney, my cat, curled up on my lap, sides heaving in a silent purr, the sound of the dishwasher faithfully doing its job, a steaming cup of coffee with the promise of warmth and alertness sitting on the end table, my husband out walking the dog and the sun pouring through the autumn leaves into my otherwise silent room, I am content.  Content to contemplate this concept of silence from and with God.  There’s a coziness to the idea, a sense of peace–and yes, the ultimate test of intimacy.

Enjoy the silence–God is working.

I don’t know about you, but for me, the greatest test of a relationship and intimacy is when things are silent, especially if you are stuck in a car with someone.  I’ve experienced may kinds of “silences” in cars.  Silence has its own kind of energy. When you sit silent with God, if you will allow Him to, His energy will bring you a calming, intimate, peace.  As my doodle illustrates, It’s like being hugged by silent “word bubbles”, for lack of knowing what to call them this morning. (I guess I need more coffee!)  Things are happening in the background but it’s time to just sit and enjoy His presence.   I love this quote,

A wonderful thing about God’s silence is that His stillness i contagious–it gets into you, causing you to become perfectly confident so that you can honestly say, “I know that God has heard me.”  His silence is the very proof that He has.  As long as you have the idea that God will always bless you in answer to prayer, He will do it, but He will never give you the grace of His silence.  If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His Father, then He will give you the first sign of His intimacy–silence.  —Oswald Chambers

Now I must go get ready to take a ride in the car with my husband, enjoy the sun and the fall colors, and possibly some intimate silence.
