Depression–we are all capable of it. Without it we wouldn’t know happiness, laughter, exaltation. Although we all experience it, we are not meant to live there. God wants us to live in peace and joy.
There are many forms of depression as well. Sometimes it’s just feeling blue, feeling sorry for oneself, wanting more then we have, seeing a friend or loved one in pain, or suffering a tremendous loss. In all cases, God calls you to do the ordinary. This is how Oswald Chambers put it, ‘Depression tends to turn us away from the everyday things of God’s creation. But whenever God steps in, His inspiration is to do the most natural, simple things–things we would never have imagined God was in, but as we do them we find Him there.’
There are ordinary things we can do to help lift our spirits. Go for a walk, let the birds or a choir of frogs serenade you, breath in the fresh, life giving air. Write a note to someone in need. Go visit a sick person or take some food to them. Do something nice for a stranger. Connect…with food, nature, friends–and through all that, you’re connecting with God Himself and ‘as soon as we arise and obey, we enter a higher plane of life,’ our depression is lifted.
